#158 Northwich battle to deserved win

Posted by Admin on 01 September 2016 - 11:42 AM

Runcorn Town's miserable form against 1874 Northwich continued with the visitors winning 2-0 at Pavilions on a sorry night for the home side. Its now five games played with 1874 winning all five meetings between the sides.
Scott Bailey opened the scoring on 14 minutes, receiving the ball 25-yards from goal, turning inside the defender before executing a lob that Louie Mackin did well to get a hand on, but couldn't prevent it dropping underneath the bar.
It could have been a cricket score by half time, with 1874 looking sharp and opting for a direct game that Town could not cope with. It was 1-0 at the break with Runcorn coming out in determined fashion for the second half.
The game took a drastic swing just minutes into the second half when Daniel Jarrett and Mackin collided on the edge of the box. It signalled the end of the game for both men, with Dave Forbes going in goal with Runcorn not having a goalkeeper on the bench.
The ten minute delay took the impotus away from 1874 with Runcorn coming back into the game more. Cairns almost levelled but for an excellent last ditch tackle by a visiting defender as he was about to shoot.
As stoppage time rolled around, Joe Heath was sent off on his home debut for a second yellow card that will see him miss the FA Vase game against Winsford United in two weeks. And five minutes into stoppage time, Stuart Wellstead made it 2-0, hitting a low shot across Forbes into the corner of the net, a precise finish from the former Runcorn player.
Runcorn's misery was completed two minutes later when Kevin Exell went in late with a tackle in the centre of the pitch. A straight red card followed, with the final whistle blown shortly after.
